Every now and again in this game, you get a doozy of a job. This event
was 10 days in Florida, and was definitely my doozy for 2023. Parts of my role involved supervising setting up the sound and lighting equipment for two 'Poolside' events on consecutive evenings.
There were signs warning us to beware of alligators and snakes.
Thankfully we saw neither.
There was buffet food in abundance, mainly meat related, but at almost £17 for a tuna sandwich and £33 for a breakfast none of it was cheap.
The hardware was all hired in locally, and the American crew were great guys, but for a culture supposedly engrained with a customer service work ethic, it appeared to be more about charging the client extortionate amounts of money than actually doing anything in service of the customer.
So much so that our end client, a UK company, who were holding a global sales event, had chosen to fly three British event professionals half way around the world to support them, rather than relying on local suppliers.
The Americans were a bit put out by this, and I could understand why, but the cost wasn't that much different to using local guys.
Ultimately, the US and UK teams worked together very well in spite of the potential politics, and collectively we all did what we do best, which is to put on a great event for our client.
